October is National Sensory Awareness Month. This is a great time for the author Jennifer Gilpin Yacio to roll out her new children’s book, “Temple Did It, and I Can Too!: Seven Simple Life Rules”. Yacio has authored many books but this is her first picture-based book geared toward younger readers on the autism spectrum. The seven simple life rules in the story come directly from Temple Grandin’s experience.

Temple Grandin is looked up to by many. She is a leading expert in the autism world and an inspiration to everyone who crosses her path. She has also authored many books. If you have not had a chance to read any of her written work, you should get your hands on a copy of one of her books ASAP!

In their book, topics like good hygiene and manners are covered. The book also includes worksheets to help your child set and reach their goals. Temple reportedly believed including the topic of manners was important since “kids today have no manners” these days and she believes this will “hurt them”. Temple has said, “I see kids with Asperger’s [a mild form of autism] who can’t hold a job because they are constantly late. Teach kids to use an alarm clock. This is common sense and sometimes we forget about common sense. Autism is used too much as an excuse for bad behavior. We have to set examples of good behavior.”

While this book is geared towards children with autism it can be used by any child to set and achieve goals. Goal setting is a great topic to teach when your child is young.
